a love letter to my clients

They don’t tell you this in Esthetician school, but your clients can make or break your career, and I don’t just mean this in the sense of success and money. It’s the difference between looking forward to your working days, or completely dreading them. These are people that you may end up seeing more than extended family, or long distance friends. You see them regularly, and routinely they become a part of your life. They open up to you, maybe even more than their own friends and you build relationships with these people that were once strangers. Yes, there is a level of professionalism that one should always keep, but it’s just natural that you grow friendships with your regulars.

We inherently seek comfort and familiarity in our lives and when we find it in others, that’s not something people let go of easily- especially in such an intimate setting as getting a facial. Clients will stay longer with an esthetician they like, even if they aren’t getting the results they seek. I know this because I’ve gained a handful of clients after their esthetician moved or retired. Satisfied by my results they were surprised by all the gadgets and methods I used; even though they’d been getting regular facials for years. Out of curiosity I asked one, “Why did you stay with your esthetician for so long if you weren’t getting the results you wanted?”

“I really enjoyed seeing her and the results were good enough.”

When a client walks through the door of my treatment room, their skin is now mine. I treat their skin with the same respect and extreme care that I take care of my own and when that’s recognized by my clients it’s a feeling greater than getting results. It’s validation. It’s a deep knowing that I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be. A feeling that I chose a right path in my life, and that is a satisfaction that is indescribable.

Every regular client I have is not just a reflection of my ability as an esthetician, but who I am as a person. The road was long and winding for me to get here, to be comfortable in my own skin and in taking care of others. As much as I love and have had a passion for skin care, it wasn’t an easy path for me. The seemingly simple fact that each client chooses to come back to me and feels comfortable to do so is something that will never be lost on me.
