3 easy steps to start your skin care routine - Skin Care 101

Knowing where to begin your skin care journey can be an overwhelmingly daunting task. In this tiktok/instagram era we are inundated with information to the point that applying anything we learn feels impossible. Even as an esthetician it’s taken me years to weed through quality information and understand how to decipher all the products and posts I’m looking at.
Starting your skin care routine doesn’t have to be difficult, in fact it shouldn’t be. If it’s not simple enough to implement into your daily life, then it wont be effective. And if you just start putting anything and everything on your face, you’re more likely to cause harm and damage your skin barrier than you are to end up with clear, glowing skin.
So let’s keep it clear, simple and concise on what you should do to jump start your skin care journey
1. Find a Basic Facial Cleanser
What is a basic facial cleanser? It’s one that you can use day and night, one without exfoliants or harsh surfactants (cleaning agents). Formulations have come a long way, so thankfully there is a vast selection out there. Check out Target, Ulta and Sephora for some accessible selections.
Some people find it hard to wash their face twice a day and/or being out of the shower. Honestly, do whatever fits your lifestyle and routine because I’m not here to judge nor do I care to. My one bit of advice is that you should do your best to implement washing your face every single night before bed. Washing the day off before your head hits the pillow is not only sanitary but one of the best feelings. Waking up the next morning feeling clean and soft and ready for the day... what could be better? (I’ll tell you what, adding in a hydrating lip product but maybe that’s for another time)
2. SPF/Moisturizer
SPF is a non-negotiable. Without it every time you step out into UV rays they are damaging your skin cells and DNA, creating the perfect environment for cancer to form. Again, there is such a vast selection out there that there is no excuse not to find something that works for you.
My personal favorite right now is Naturiums Dew-Glow Moisturizer with SPF 50. It’s a great base for makeup and most importantly it protects my skin!
You’ll want to find a basic moisturizer for night time, and use it every single night after you wash your face. Every time you wash your face without putting on a moisturizer you’re leaving your skins barrier exposed and vulnerable, eventually making you more susceptible to bacteria, acne and inflammation.
3. Vitamin C
Okay this one might feel overwhelming if you’re truly just starting out but I think its a simple ingredient that is important for skin health. I recommend Vitamin C to every client of mine, unless they’re allergic and in that case there are alternatives. Vitamin C is an antioxidant, and it’s essential for collagen synthesis (production of collagen) and DNA repair. This may not be interesting to anyone other than me (and other estheticians) but it actually feeds the cells that produce collagen- fibroblast cells.
I like to get my vitamin C when its in a serum form, and cocktail it in my hand with my SPF in the morning. Pairing it with an SPF helps prevent UV damage WHILE it’s happening as well as healing damage that’s been done.
I genuinely believe this is a great step into a simple skin care routine that’s still effective and one I recommend all clients get onto if they’re just starting out or they have a damaged barrier.

Below is a link to products I use and recommend for a beginner in skin care. Glymedplus is a brand I’ve been using in my treatment room and at home for 5 years. They’re effective and straight to the point. I only recommend products I use- and though I’ve tried a lot I found what works for me personally. Everyone is different and I will never judge or put down others for using what is accessible and works for them.
